UTV Brake Pads & Brake Shoes

You need to be able to stop when you want to stop. Worn and inferior UTV brake pads just won’t cut it when you need it most. Side by sides are built to be used in a wide variety of terrains and conditions and the brake pads need to be able to handle it as well. There are three different kinds of brake pads to choose from. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

The most common UTV brake pads used by serious riders are metallic sintered pads. Sintered pads are built to handle the rigorous conditions that side by sides go through. The harder metallic compounds used to make the pads make them longer lasting as well. They also handle heat well and resist brake fade. Their stopping power at high speeds is exceptional. The downsides of sintered pads are that they tend to cost more, are harder on rotors and they don’t produce as great of a feel as organic.

Organic UTV brake pads are a great choice for light duty and commuter use. The softer compounds of organic pads allow them to be much more quiet than metallic. They also produce much less brake dust, keeping your wheels clean. Most importantly, organic pads provide a progressive feel when braking. The biggest downside is that the softer compound allows them to wear much faster than sintered. Mud and debris accelerate the wear of organic pads, which are common occurrences in a UTV.

The best compromise are semi-metallic brake pads. They are built with a blend of both metallic and organic materials. This blend can provide similar benefits to both sintered and organic, but at reduced rates. They are often a great value of performance and lifespan for the money.
