Harley-Davidson Charging System Parts
The charging system of your Harley is integral to operation. The charging system can consist of the battery, alternator, regulator/rectifier (voltage regulator), and stator. All components need to work in order for the motorcycle to run. When one fails, power cannot be restored to keep all the components of the engine working properly. Replacing a failed component with one of high quality will ensure that your Harley will be as dependable as when it was new.
When chasing gremlins in the charging system, start with the battery and then move to the stator. If you notice the battery draining during operation, the stator can be the culprit. The stator’s job is to create electrical current that is sent to the regulator/rectifier that is then used to charge the battery. The next step in diagnostics is the voltage regulator.
If your Harley is equipped with just an alternator, testing is a bit more simplified. The alternator works the same as the stator and voltage regulator system but is in a contained unit. Generators are a contained unit as well but work with rotors to create current.
