New Harley-Davidson Milwaukee Eight Engine Parts
Harley Milwaukee 8 Engine PartsWith every introduction of a new Big Twin comes a new era in the Harley-Davidson legacy. The introduction of the Milwaukee Eight has turned the page and has begun an all new chapter. The M8 is ushering in new Harley technology and performance where the previous Twin Cams could not reach. The Milwaukee Eight is now in all Big Twin bikes including Touring, Trikes and the new Softail lineups. The name is derived from this mill’s use of eight valves, four per cylinder. The all new powerplant is a bit of a departure from its predecessors in the fact that it utilizes tech that hasn’t been seen on the Big Twins.
For its first offerings, the Milwaukee Eight is offered in three unique configurations. The base engine is the M8 107 in, which features oil-cooled cylinder heads. Next in the lineup is the same 107 in displacement, but utilizes liquid-cooled heads, something not seen in previous Big Twins. The alpha dog of the lineup is the M8 114 in liquid cooled engine. The use of the engine is dependent on what model the engine is being placed in.
The new M8 mill is said to produce 10% more torque than the outgoing Twin Cams. This is in part due to the 8 valve setup, which is able to produce 50% intake and exhaust flow. More air flow equals more power. A dual spark plug per cylinder setup also helps to create more efficient combustion for an added pop and fuel efficiency. This engine uses a single, less complex camshaft, which is lighter and creates less noise than previous models. It weighs the same as its outgoing predecessor, which combined with its increased power makes it much quicker off of the line.
The M8 features many other upgrades that make the engine better. To reduce vibration, it is rubber mounted and utilizes a single internal counter balancer. This setup is claimed to eliminate 75% of the primary vibration at idle. Bikes equipped with the new engine also utilize a slip clutch to help reduce lever effort. With the new cooling setup and a relocated rear exhaust pipe, heat build-up is much less of a factor.
