Staying warm while riding is important not only for your comfort, but also for your health. Making sure you are prepared for the weather will keep you cozy while riding in low temps and protect yourself from hypothermia.
Always check the weather before you ride. This may seem like a no brainer, but in your excitement to hit the pavement it can be forgotten. Remember just because it is warm and sunny when you start your ride, doesn’t mean it will be that way when you finish it. Check the weather quick before taking a ride to make sure that you are aware of any upcoming changes.
When you are getting dressed for your ride remember that it is always colder on your bike than it is standing outside your front door. Dress in layers so you are ready for any conditions. Be sure to have a warm base layer that wicks away moisture. Materials such as cotton will absorb moisture, which will quickly rob your body of precious heat if the temperature drops. You also need to make sure that your riding gear limits your exposure to wind. Make sure that any openings in your outer layer (such as the collar and cuffs) fit tightly to your body so cold air cannot flow through. Also consider wearing gloves with a gauntlet and tucking your pants into your boots.

Electric clothing can also help provide warmth and comfort while riding. You can get gloves, vests, jackets, liners, and pants that plug into your bike or a battery that will generate heat to keep you toasty warm. Be careful not to wear this type of gear directly against your skin to avoid burning.
If you think there is even the slightest chance of precipitation you should wear rain gear. Staying dry is the key to staying warm. A waterproof outer layer can mean the difference between a teeth-chattering ride and a comfortable one.
