Snowmobile Safety Tips

In honor of “International Snowmobile Safety Awareness Week” we thought we would provide you with some quick tips to keep you riding safely this winter.

Snowmobile safety starts long before you hit the trails. Here is a quick safety checklist to help you prepare for your next trail ride.

Planning: Map out your ride using trail maps. You should plan the length of your trip and people you are traveling with. Riding alone can be dangerous. Always plan rides with a group of people you can trust. You should also let a friend or family member know where you are going along with details about where you are going, estimated trip length, and contact information.

Pack an emergency kit: It is very important to have the proper equipment in case of emergencies. Here is a list of items that you should include in your emergency kit

  • First Aid Kit: Make sure it is stored in a waterproof container
  • Tool kit
  • Survival items: could include compass, waterproof matches, space blanket, water, food
  • Spark plugs
  • Drive belt
  • Tow straps
  • Flares
  • Flashlight with spare batteries
  • Extra ignition key
  • Personal items: ID, money, medication, insurance forms, cell phone

Check your ride: Before riding your sled you need to ensure that everything is working properly. Check your fuel and battery, skis and wear rods, drive belt, handlebars, brakes, lights, emergency switch, and throttle (it needs to easily switch to idle or closed). You should also make sure that you have been keeping up with your snowmobile maintenance.

Be familiar with local laws: Laws can vary from state to state. Be sure that you are aware of the laws regarding snowmobiling in your state. Here is a list of general snowmobile laws. You should also make sure you are using proper hand signals.

Apparel: Always make sure that you check the weather before your trip. This will help you plan your riding apparel. It is important to dress in layers and limit skin exposure.
