Continuing on with our interview series from the Sturgis Garage Build Show, we catch up with amateur builder Michael Maloney. Michael brought an original Shovelhead build to the show. Michael built his motorcycle in his home garage. He went with a Springer front end with Fat Bob tanks for a truly unique build. Michael stripped the bike down and powder coated the frame for a complete tear down and rebuild.

My name is Michael Maloney. I’m from New Jersey. I found this bike in a shed. It was a widow that was selling the bike. Sat for a couple of years. I was looking to find an old Shovelhead to build. This bike needed a lot of work, so we took basically everything off the bike, powder coated the frame, put the motor back in, put the Fat Bob tanks on, had them airbrushed to look like a finished line.
I wanted an old look, so I put the Springer forks on. I use these La Choppers Tree Huggers and we got this mount that we were able to use the Tree Huggers and not have to have any risers.
And had a lot of fun riding this bike around. Sounds great with the straight pipes. I have a very small garage, but I was able to I have a lift. I was able to build this in my garage. The great thing with this show is it is a garage builder show. So, it’s not professional builders. It can be tough sometimes competing as an amateur so to say. And so, coming to the Dennis Kirk Garage Builder show and showing off what I’m able to do and building a bike was, was a reason for coming down here today.
I do ride this bike all around in in New Jersey where I’m from. I’ve ridden around out here in South Dakota, which is great. Love coming out here to the Sturgis rally and ride the bike. It’s great being here at the Dennis Kirk Garage Builder show with all these great builders. There’s some beautiful bikes here today. A lot of people that spend a lot of time in their garage working on their bikes, building something beautiful. And I’m just glad to be here with them to show off my bike.
