Waspcam Action Cameras: A New Alternative

Posted on 23 Feb 2015 in Powersports | 2 comments

Action cameras and the brand GoPro have just about become synonymous at this point, but they certainly are not the only option to capture your adventures.  One new competitor that is working their way onto the scene is the Canada-based Waspcam.  Waspcam action cameras have set themselves up with a product that can seriously rival the powerhouse GoPro, or at the least provide another option for active people looking for cameras.

With their slogan “Prove It,” Waspcam is aiming to provide cameras for everyone; from the weekend warrior all the way to the professionals.  And with that goal, the first thing that most will notice about the Waspcams is their price point.  They have three main cameras (with different packages available for two of them) all at very affordable prices.  Coming in at the entry level, a person could begin recording in 1080 HD for a low rate.  At the high end, users can capture professional quality video and images.

Another way that Waspcam is trying to distinguish themselves from their competition is by offering unique features that only they provide.  One of these is the wireless wrist remotes that can be used to operate the cameras.  Their top dog camera, the Gideon, can be paired with a wireless wrist remote with a display screen that allows you to constantly see what the camera is actually recording.  You will be able to capture even more precise video with this function.

Below are the specs for each Waspcam camera so that you can get a better idea of what they are capable of.

Waspcam Gideon

As the premier camera in their lineup, the Gideon comes with the most features and highest quality recording capabilities.  The Gideon has the capability to record in 1080p60, 1080p30, 960p60 and 720p120.  It also has the ability to capture still photos at up to 16 megapixels or at 12mp, 8mp and 5mp.  Photos can be captured using the photo burst, time lapse or timer modes in addition to the button.  With the Auto-Looping Function, you are able to have the video record over itself without having to manually create space.  This is great for when the camera is being used as a dash cam or any other continuous recording.

Action Camera

The Gideon uses built-in WiFi to connect to the wrist remote and also to your smartphone.  Waspcam has a free app that allows you to use your smartphone for live viewing and to control the camera through the WiFi connection as well.  By using the smartphone app, you also have quick access to share the video right away by either uploading it to your social media, Dropbox, YouTube or by email.  This feature is perfect for giving people live updates of your adventures.

Included is a waterproof case, which makes the camera waterproof down to 196 feet.  The wrist remote is also waterproof down to the same depth.  The Gideon comes with a wide variety of mounts and accessories to get you started.  With an adapter, it is also compatible to use with GoPro mounts.  The Gideon is also offered without the wrist remote so you can get the camera at an even lower price point.

Waspcam 9900/9901

Next in the Waspcam lineup is the 9900/9901 camera.  This action camera has a lot of the same features of the Gideon baked into it and it is a great choice for someone who wants high quality footage with a good amount of control.  The 9900 comes with a wrist remote to make operating the camera simple.  This remote does not have the viewing screen like the Gideon does, but it does make starting and stopping the camera quick and easy.  The 9900/9901 camera can be synched up to the Waspcam mobile app for live viewing capability and operation.

Action Camera

The 9900/9901 captures video at 1080p30, 960p30 and 720p60 and 5mp still photos.  Photos can be captured individually or by using the time lapse and photo burst options.  This will actually let you capture video and photos simultaneously so that you never miss any of the action when you want a great picture.

This middle range Waspcam comes with a wide range of mounts and accessories to get you started and also is compatible with GoPro mounts when used with the adapter.  With the waterproof case, both the camera and wrist remote are waterproof down to 196 feet.

Waspcam JAKD

The Junior and Kids Design (JAKD) camera was designed with kids and entry level consumers in mind.  This Waspcam is a great option for someone who wants to “Prove It,” but doesn’t want to go out of there budget to do so.  While the JAKD camera is not going to have as many features as the Gideon or the 9900/9901, it is still capable capturing HD video at 1080p25 or at 720p30.  Still images can be captured at up to 5mp or 3mp.

Action Camera

The JAKD camera is not without some cool features though.  On the back there is a built-in 2 in. LCD touch-screen for live viewing and feedback and also easy operation.  The 4x digital zoom allows you to get the perfect shot, even when you’re not right next to the action.  Like the Gideon, the JAKD camera has the Auto-Looping feature so you can be constantly recording.  For lowlight conditions, the camera has built-in LED lighting lamps and infrared.

The JAKD camera comes with the mounts and accessories needed to get started.  It does, however, uses a different mounting system and is not compatible with the other Waspcam camera mounts.  The waterproof case allows it to be submerged in up to 90 feet of water.  All in all, it is a great option at the entry-level camera.

I’m looking into these cans but heard if you ride with it the audio is so bad you can’t stand watching the video. I’m looking at the new 1080p one and 4k one they have at iron pony as I need a can under 100 and love this price range!
