When most people think of motorcycle rides, they think of hoards of leather and the traditional motorcycle gear on riders who may appear on the edgier side. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is no such event. Participants in this ride dress to the 9’s. With dress suits, polished shoes and perfectly sculpted mustaches, these dapper gentleman are riding for a noble cause. The focus of the ride is to raise funds to put toward Prostate Cancer research and awareness programs and will take place all over the world.
This ride of gentleman will take place this Sunday, the 29th in 115 cities in 33 different countries. That is up from last year’s inaugural attendance of about 2500 riders from 64 cities. The DGR did not start off as a fundraiser ride. Last year was the first year of the ride and the sole purpose was to spread “merriment” across the globe with their dapper appearances on their bikes. While they still plan on spreading merriment, the organizers of the ride have realized that they can also make an impact on Men’s health.
The DGR is aimed at niche motorcycle enthusiasts. This includes café racers, bobbers, classic and retro bikes and custom bikes. While they will not turn down a rider who appears in dapper apparel, they suggest that most of the riders are on niche bikes to promote the niche motorcycle community, in which this ride was started for. The fine folks who put on the DGR also acknowledge that wearing dapper clothing is not the safest motorcycle apparel and recommend that the rider should wear their protective gear underneath if they feel unsafe.
All donations to the ride can be made on the DGR website. Though the ride is promoting a charity, they will not require anyone to make a donation or to pay anything to participate in the ride. If you do not want to participate in the ride but you believe in the cause, you can also feel free to sponsor a rider who is participating in the DGR. There are still two days left to register on the website. As of now, they have raised about $215k of their $250k goal. Help them reach their goal and be a Distinguished Gentleman (or woman). Ride locations are listed on their website.
