Width is measured in a straight line from the furthest point on one sidewall, across the tread, to the furthest point on the opposite sidewall.

Hard pack and rock tires should have closely spaced lugs for a smooth ride and excellent grip. And of course, nothing beats a paddle tire in the dunes.
Another factor to consider when purchasing new ATV tires is the tire construction. Riders can choose between either bias-ply or radial construction. Each has their benefits and downfalls. Bias-ply tires tend to be more durable with stiffer sidewalls. The stiff construction, though can make for a rougher ride. Radials, on the other hand, provide a very smooth and consistent ride. Radials are more susceptible to sidewall punctures, though. Choosing the right tire construction depends greatly on how and where you ride your machine.
