My goal for the build was to completely rethink and redesign the bike with retro styling, and performance mods. The big thing was to try and lighten the bike as much as possible to make the big DR feel small. At the end of the build process, the bike is estimated (using my home scale) to be 70lbs lighter than a stock DR.
Initially purchased the bike to only throw wheels and tires on the bike to enjoy it around town. After looking over the bike and deciding it needed a face lift, went ahead and did a complete frame up build.
I think modeling it after a late 70’s Suzuki RM is the most unique thing about it. Bodywork, tank, number plate from late 70’s Suzuki RM. People either hate it or love it. Vintage bikes are bold and have a presence about them that I love. I am a big fan of retro styling, so usually my builds encompass some form of retro styling mixed with modern performance.
I’m most proud of the fact that ever bolt was taken off by me and put back on to create something in my head. I don’t have CAD (coming soon) but I created a sketch of my idea on Microsoft paint and I am pleased that the bike almost is identical to my sketch. I wanted to tackle the exhaust myself, so I made the tailpipe to run along the rear subframe and couldn’t be happier with the result. I built everything from my home garage, and hope one day I can grow to open my own shop (that’s my dream).
I have had such a positive response from the motorcycle community and I couldn’t be happier. Makes me feel as if I am doing something right. Since I have had such a positive response, I decided to build a newer version of the bike to sell. It wont look the same, but will have retro styling with all the goodies!
