1975 Laverda SF2

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

The bike is a matching numbers Laverda SF2 from the mid 70’s. I was torn whether to restore it to original condition or build myself an SFC clone.  I chose the latter.  I’m a big Laverda fan and also have an original RGS and an original RGS Jota.  I think the SFC’s are one of the best looking European cafe bikes and since I can’t afford a real one, why not a copy.

What motivated you to start your project?

I purchased the bike about 25 years ago out of a shed on EBay. It was about 50%.  Spent the last 24 years accumulating the missing and unusable parts.  Many of the SFC parts are genuine.  The COVID time out provided the impetus to get er done.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the bike?

First of all, I finished it and had it fire up on the first hit of the starter. I’ve rebuilt quite a few Triumph’s and BSA’s  but this was my first attempt with this type timing chain configuration. The lower end was solid so I didn’t split the block.  My creative endeavor was I didn’t drop the cam chain in the bottom and after many furious attempts, finally was able to reconnect the chain links.

What are you most proud of?

I’m really pleased how it turned out and the originality of the component pieces.  Most were purchased 20 or more years ago before prices went through the roof.  I believe the front fairing, fairing mounts, fenders, wind screen, tail section, seat, exhaust and rear sets to be genuine SFC replacement parts.  I can’t be certain, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Yes, it’s a reimagined SF but the pieces that make it an SFC may indeed be the real deal.

What do other people say about your motorcycle?

Some of the purists said I should have restored it back to original.  However those that may only be somewhat familiar with the marque, thought I did a pretty good job of it. I tend to agree.
