1948 Indian Chief

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

End up with a unique and solidly built 48 Indian bobber to ride.

What motivated you to start your project?

Authentic post war bobbers are my thing. It was time to build another one. These motorcycles were all about function, not pretty and shiny. I think it’s important for young motorcyclists to see what the original bobbers were like compared to “new” bobbers the manufacturers are putting out.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the bike?

I machine and hand polished the steel springer front end. Not chrome or nickel plated. Unpainted and just rubbed with 3-IN-ONE oil to prevent rust.

What are you most proud of?

My wife. The front fender was all her idea. It was a scrap cut left over from the old 37 Buick spare tire cover I reworked to make the rear fender. My plan was to not run a front fender. But the naked 5 X 16 front tire looked kind of cartoonish. She grabbed that piece out of the scrap box, held it up to the bike and man, it just popped. I just made up some mounts and bolted it on as-is. We get a lot of compliments on “my wife’s” front fender.

What do other people say about your motorcycle?

They like the front fender, appreciate the authenticity, originality and simplicity of the way it is built.
