In this DK Interviews session, we head to St. Louis, Missouri to step into the garage with builder Randall Noldge. Randall truly has a passion for custom motorcycles, which has led him on a path of not only building bikes, but also showcasing the work of others. The Cycle Showcase STL event was founded by Noldge in attempt to bring a top-notch custom show to his area. The show continues to grow every year and showcases some top talent from the area.
Randall’s journey began in Iowa where he grew up riding dirt bikes. This early riding really planted the passion inside of him. Another passion of his was for live music. He spent time as a roadie and as a sound engineer. While on the road, Randall would often see a motorcycle riding by and would wish that was where he was instead of on the bus. So, when he found more stability by working for a music venue, Randall knew he could now really dive into his passion for motorcycles.
He really dove into the custom world by starting to build his own motorcycles. Having come from the music world, he could really appreciate the importance of creativity and craftsmanship needed to be successful in the custom scene. And that appreciation eventually led him to create the Cycle Showcase STL event. Randall’s goal was to highlight and showcase all the unique builds of others in his area.
The Cycle Showcase STL exhibits the motorcycles in the fashion of a museum with the bikes on raised platforms like the pieces of art that they are. The show also displays motorcycle related artwork alongside the custom builds. Randall has taken his experience from the concert world to amplify the experience of his motorcycle show. He has incorporated show lighting that changes, which helps to showoff the bikes in a new way. Video walls and unveilings also help to immerse the attendees into the show.
When building a bike, Randall lets the project speak to him. The build naturally develops as he works through the process. If he’s building bikes for others, he likes to partner with that person to ensure that they are a part of the build process as well. He likes to say that he is not building it for them, he is building it with them. This involves that person to be present throughout the entire build, which ensures that they are intimate with that bike.
Randall’s garage serves as a sanctuary where he collaborates with talented individuals, builds bikes, and fosters a sense of community. Throughout his journey, Randall reflects on the highs and lows of life on the road, the joy of finding his niche in St. Louis, and the satisfaction of sharing his passion with others. He values connections and stories, whether it’s through music, motorcycles, or everyday interactions. Ultimately, Randall’s optimism and dedication shine through as he continues to build and create in his hometown.
