how to measure

Width is measured in a straight line from the furthest point on one sidewall, across the tread, to the furthest point on the opposite sidewall.

The aspect ratio is the height of the tire sidewall. A smaller number means a lower profile, and the height-to-width ratio is shown as a percent.

Rim diameter is the diameter of the rim/wheel on which the tire will be mounted, in inches.

Dirt Bike Sand & Paddle Tires

When it comes to riding in the dunes or in any other extremely sandy conditions, your dirt bike tire selection is of the utmost importance. The wrong tire setup will leave you in a trench, going nowhere fast. Outfitting your bike with proper dirt bike sand tires and paddle tires is the best option to propel yourself throughout the sandy terrain.

Though you can get away with a knobby tire at low psi in the rear, there is no comparison to running a paddle tire. Dirt bike paddle tires are specifically designed to scoop the sand and propel your machine forward. The wide gap between the paddles help to clean the tire of sand, which ensures that the tire is always achieving traction. By having excellent traction with a paddle tire, you are able to keep your speed up to stay afloat.

Paddle tires are not required for the front tire, but sand specific knobbies can still make a big difference. Front dirt bike sand tires should include a fairly solid centerline of knobbies. This centerline provides better steering. A good separation of the rest of the knobbies help to clean out the tire to ensure traction while cornering. These sand specific front tires are also designed to better stay afloat in soft sand and loamy terrain.

There are a few things you can do to prolong the life of your new dirt bike sand tires. First, do not ride your paddle tires on hard pack. The harder terrain can damage the paddles and traction will also be very limited. Be sure to run your sand tires at the proper psi. Ensure the paddles will clear your rear fender. Coming in contact with the fender can damage both the tire and the fender. Also be sure to choose an appropriate number of paddles for the size of engine your machine has. The more power your machine makes, the more paddles you can run.
