1997 Ski Doo MXZ

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

I wanted a sled that would last 5k miles without having to do anything but grease and oil. I also wanted a sled that could not be kept up with on the trail by anything else!!!

What motivated you to start your project?

The cost and unreliability of new sleds. And I like the open hood ease of access for engine adjustments.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the sled?

The entire skid is custom including the mounts on the tunnel. I took different sc-10 parts from 6 different sleds made jigs and drilled out the rails accordingly. I fabricated a few of the parts as well

What are you most proud of?

The handling!!!! And power to the trail. It’s a stock 500 rotax and I’ve had to pop the hood to prove it wasn’t a 670!!

What do other people say about your snowmobile?

“man what did you do to that thing”  “you got balls to ride that ANTIQUE up here all alone” ( before we got snow I rode from two harbors to hungry Jack lodge on Canadian border alone a couple times).

Specifics

Classification: Wild
Make, Model & Year: 1997 Ski Doo MXZ
Fondly known as: Frankenstein
Time spent: 80+
Snowmobile cost: 400
Money spent: 1000
Engine: Stock 500cc bulletproof rotax!! Had 4k on it I took it apart and everything was on low end of spec I replaced every seal and gasket and put new oversized ski Doo rings that I ground the end gap on.
Intake: Stock carbs w oversized jets wich I change with Temp and adjust needle accordingly which does have a huge effect on power!!!
Exhaust: Stock
Drivetrain: Stock clutches with different insides. I have about 10-15 hours of work getting it where I like it. To match the sprockets I went with can’t remember what I finally kept
Tunnel/Chassis Modifications: Drilled out old skid mounts made a jig and remounted different zx mounts from a 02 440 mxzx
Suspension: made a custom skid from 4 different skids. I had to make a custom jig to drill out the rails for perfect allignment. I added a half inch on each side in the front had to change the steering arm so tie rides are on top of plate so they wouldn’t hit the belly pan. Rebuildable HPG shocks all around.
Brakes: Stock… They did overheat on me when I raced a new ditch pickle from Wolf Creek to Rush City (couldn’t see his headlight within a mile!!) I will be addressing this issue.
Finish – Paint: Stock still
Accessories: Heated helmet plug, taller windshield, gauntlet handle bar covers. 2 stage throttle lever. I plan to put a rev seat and bar risers on to finish the build this summer because there’s too much snow to be wrenching on it
