1972 John Deere 400

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

The objective is save history, and be able to pass it on. The JD 400 I found was a mess and the owner was going to junk it. some kids had tried to fix a non running sled and completely took it apart. 90% of the sled was in boxes and bags. my goal was to get it running again.

What motivated you to start your project?

I love snowmobiling, And love the older sleds they are light simple and fun to ride. They are not the plush sleds like today. To ride them you need to use your body and it is more a feel thing. You need to be able to react to the trail, repair them on the fly, and be willing to take the beating.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the sled?

It is 100% original, and runs like a dream. Finicky to start but runs great this is due to it having a bit lower compression as it needs new rings but I just have not wanted to strip the motor down quite yet.

What are you most proud of?

It was picked up for free, and all in pieces. I replaced the wiring harness, plugs, a few bolts, the Bumper replaced and cleaned it up and reassembled it. one ski is not a match but it is functional, the Hood has been redone. At the moment. I was about to disassemble it and have it all sent out for repainting and then reassemble. but that has been put on hold till my boys are off to college as they love to run this sled. and all there friends need to ride it as well when they come over.

What do other people say about your snowmobile?

It is just fun to ride. and sounds cool too as it has a wine to it that is hard to describe. but it makes everyone smile and laugh.

I found a 1973 JD model 500 ccw 440 engine in same condition all in pcs and was told it wouldn’t run and got a 400 ccw engine with it and the ccw 290 engine also for 200.00. had her running within a week and have since totally restored er. Looks like it just left the showroom floor back in 73′ And yup that ccw 440 is a screamer! Gotta love and cherish those old JDs.πŸ˜€πŸ‘πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ
