Motorcycle Brake Fluid, Coolant, Sealant & Additives

There are a lot of motorcycle fluids in your bike that are not oil, but are just as important. Motorcycle brake fluid, coolant and sealants are all crucial to the performance of your machine. These fluids do, however, tend to get ignored or forgotten about when their service time comes around. While, the operation of your bike may not suffer immediately, it could fail when you need it the most. Servicing these fluids regularly and using the correct fluids for your machine will keep it operating just as it is supposed to.

So much focus is always placed on making your bike go, but being able safely stop it is equally as important. When your motorcycle’s brake fluid is either low or degraded, you will notice a lack of braking power, which could lead to an accident. Your brake fluid should be replaced every 1-2 years, even if it is not low. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means that it will absorb any moisture that it comes in contact with. The absorption of moisture degrades the fluid and also lowers its boiling point, making it susceptible to overheating. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendation when choosing brake fluid. Motorcycles use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1 fluid (not DOT 5 unless specified).

Liquid cooled motorcycles rely on the coolant/antifreeze being pumped through the cooling system to keep them running at the ideal operating temperatures. You shouldn’t just top of your radiator with any old coolant, though. Propylene glycol antifreeze is often accepted as the ideal type of coolant for motorcycles. Motorcycle coolant should not contain any silicates or phosphates as they can form a layer over the metal components in the cooling system. Also be sure that you don’t ever mix propylene glycol with ethylene glycol. Coolant should be changed annually or biannually.

When you are replacing or reinstalling parts on your bike, it’s important that you use the proper sealants to hold that part in place. Threadlock on bolt and studs will hold them in place and will prevent them from vibrating loose from vibration. Grip glue is essential to prevent your grips from sliding off while you’re riding. Fuel additives can boost the octane, stabilize the fuel and help negate the effects of ethanol in fuel.
