    Motorcycle Charging System Parts

It can be frustrating when motorcycle charging system parts fail. For many home mechanics, these issues can prove difficult and intimidating to troubleshoot. But when you break it down to each individual component, you can systematically work your way through. Motorcycle charging systems include the battery, stator (alternator), regulator/rectifier, voltage regulators and the connections between them all. Main symptoms of charging system failure include motorcycle won’t start, it cuts out while riding, the lights either get brighter or dim considerably as you rev the engine, and/or the battery light illuminates.

Start your troubleshooting by doing a load test on the battery. If that checks out, move down stream to the next component, which is the stator or alternator. These components provide the charge to the battery as the motorcycle is running. Use your owner’s manual and a multimeter to check if these components are within spec. Next, move on to testing the regulator/rectifier system. If none of the charging components test out of spec, check all the wiring, connections and fuses attached to the system.
