The Evo is credited with turning the ship around for Harley. What came next, the Harley Twin Cam, is what shot the MOCO into another stratosphere. With the competition putting out engines with more power and were more durable, Harley needed to step up their game once again to keep up. The Twin Cam was designed specifically to produce more power and also to be more reliable on long highway touring rides. It took HD engineers much of the 90’s, starting in 1990 before being released for the ‘99 model year, to design the Twin Cam. All of their hard work paid off with one of their most successful power plants.

The Twin Cam is a completely unique engine compared to its predecessors, though it has taken elements from almost all of them. And though it came directly after the Evo, it differed quite a bit in design. One of the most important differences is the addition oil jets. The oil jets aid in cooling by spraying oil on the bottom of the pistons. The size of the cooling fins also increased to cool the engines. To keep up with the oil demand, an internal twin-gerotor oil pump was added, which boosted oil pressure. And of course, twin cams are used and are chain-driven to cut down on the noise. The crankcase was beefed up to better withstand the power that the engine puts out. There is no wasted spark on the TC engines, created by using dual coils. These are only a few of the changes, as only 18 parts are shared with the Evo.

The Twin was first released in the 88 cu in displacement. In 2007, HD upped the size to 96 cu in. HD put 103 cu in and 110 cu in mills in select models as well. The TC was not used in Softails until 2000 due to the fact that it was a hard mount and also because the transmission would not fit in the chassis. In 2000, the Twin Cam 88B engine was introduced and featured twin chain-driven balance shafts to reduce the amount of vibration. Softail engines are known as Twin Cam B engines, while all others are Twin Cam A models.

As great as the Twin Cam is on its own, it was designed to be able to handle performance upgrades. The aftermarket is really strong for this engine as well. The cam chest is one area that owners look to upgrade and brands like S&S Cycle have everything you need to upgrade. The engine’s durability allows builders to perform all stage upgrades to increase the power and torque output. The amount of aftermarket parts available for the TC mill make it one of the best engines to customize and build for custom bikes.
