Awesome buy!!
I recently bought the Shortshots for my 2000 sporty. They went on with no hassle and really make the bike look sharp. Probably one of the best purchases thus far. Not to mention the best price for them was right here on this site. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Perfect quality, great look, only okay sound.
These pipes are loud, but I liked the tone from my old cheap slip-ons better. With a 1200 sportster its all about the size of pipe, equalized back pressure, volume of air in and out, and amount of fuel being burned. All of those things need to be in the proper ratio for the bike to run its best and for the bike to sounds its best.

My bike ran great and sounded awesome with its stock CV carb and the stock pipes and aftermarket slip-ons. After I installed the VH Shortshots it misfired a lot. I had to install a Dynojet carb kit and high flow air cleaner to get the air/fuel ratio in proper balance.

Overall I like the way they look and I would buy them again. However, I do miss the way my bike used to sound and I really miss having the horizontal equalizer on the stock exhaust.
After the install, w/ stock air cleaner.

Not as loud as I feared
Solid mount Sportys don't have a whole lot of support in terms of exhaust anymore. I got these for a custom rigid project because they looked like they'd have the best lines of the few systems available.
The wind noise from my helmet is more bothersome than the exhaust noise.
Performance-wise...I just bolted them on and it runs fine. No issues. FWIW, the bike has an S&S teardrop and a Shorty E on it. Can't say what it would do with a stock carb/filter.

Great Pipes
Very nice pipes. Installed on 2000 Sporty. The only problem I ran into was that the inventory provided 1 1/2" bolts for the mounting bracket but the instructions called for 2" bolts. The instructions were correct, it needed the 2" bolts. Went to the hardware store and problem solved. Now it's time to Dynojet or S&S this guy to get the most out of the exhaust. Bike has a nice rumble now...considerably louder than my old Screaming Eagle II.

V&H Short Shots for Sporty
Installed on my 2003 Sportster 1200 Custom just yesterday. Installation went okay, did not have the correct bolt size to relocate rear peg like others have said, but found an extra 3/8" stainless laying around in the shop. Be mindful of the directions and whether you have forward controls or not, i didnt need most of the associated parts for that and skipped a lot of those steps. Pipes look and sound pretty good,

Vance and Hines 2003 sporty short shots
Extremely high quaility and very reasonable price. Fit perfect and were fairly straight forward to install. The only hiccup i had was the bolt to relocate the passenger footpeg wasn't the right size. It was an easy fix though with a run to the local Fleet and Farm. Overall a great buy and they definitely increase throttle response.

do these fit with forward controls?
A shopper on Apr 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: They do indeed. I have forward controls on my 2001 and they fit fine, no issue whatsoever. However, the stock pipes and slip-ons run in front of the forward control. The shortshots run behind the forward control. It puts the heat closer to your leg but not in a manner that causes issues. It was the first thing I noticed. when I installed them. Its different, but not necessarily bad. (I did have to re-jet my carb with a Dynojet kit. Too much air, not enough fuel.)
