1998 Ski-doo Formula 500

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

Just refresh my sled a little.

What motivated you to start your project?

Wanted to refresh my sled a little. Needed a new track, and as I found out after a ride which I had her running at 85 mph I found a broken ski.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the sled?

Hung the back end by the bumper with ratchet straps to remove the skid. Leg pressed the back end while simultaneously pulling the the skid to realign the axle holes with the tunnel holes.

What are you most proud of?

Did most of the work myself, and she runs and drives… I’ve never disassembled a sled as far as this one.

What do other people say about your snowmobile?

Did most of the work myself, and she runs and drives… I’ve never disassembled a sled as far as this one.

Specifics

Classification: Mild
Make, Model & Year: Ski-doo Formula 500 1998
Fondly known as: My little red speed demon
Time spent: Too many to count.
Snowmobile cost: $600 original purchase price
Money spent: Another $650 in parts
Engine: 494 cc Rotax
Intake: Carbureted
Exhaust: I kept everything stock here. Has the original exhaust pipe still.
Drivetrain: Kept this stock too. I don’t know a whole lot about mechanics, although I’m trying to learn.
Tunnel/Chassis Modifications: Kept this pretty much stock, just added some tunnel protection as I put a studded track on.
Suspension: Kept everything here pretty much stock too. My expendable income isn’t as high as I’d like it to be.
Brakes: Kept this stock as well, again I’m a rookie at working on my own stuff.
Finish – Paint: Changed my grille and screen color. Found that most of the black paint had flaked, and turned to rust. So I stripped the rust to bare metal and repainted them silver.
Accessories: Haven’t added anything as far as accessories.
