1982 Polaris SS440/Cutlass

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

Put the smack down on all my buddies and build a leaf spring sled that scares me when I ride it!

What motivated you to start your project?

My friends started an event here in Michigan 4 years ago known as Cheap Sled Challenge.  Basically buy and build a pre 85 leafer for 300 bucks, then spend the weekend thrashing it and racing your buddies in various events to win the coveted championship belt.  Now it has grown and morphed into three classes.  This was built for the “Outlaw” class, which retains the pre 85, leafer and $300 initial cost of chassis rule, but after that budget and build is only limited by your imagination.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the sled?

Either fabricating my own plates to mount the jackshaft and driveshaft from scratch, or widening the stance 10 inches.

What are you most proud of?

The fact that the sled could almost pass as stock but does 106 mph on how and pulls the front skis at will.

What do other people say about your snowmobile?

“Put a damn muffler on it.”
“So clean”
