1973 Arctic Cat el tigre’

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

I was living in south east lower Michigan. I didn’t like riding my “good” trail sled in the low snow conditions there. I wanted a beater sled.

What motivated you to start your project?

It was free.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the sled?

My Uncle’s neighbor raced it ’72-’73 and ’73-’74 when he blew the motor. In ’75 he bought a “Z”. In ’79 he quit racing. He cannibalized this sled and used the parts to make the “Z” into a trail sled. When he gave it to me he asked me not to remove the race numbers. I scrounged parts everywhere to get it rideable. The tank is from a Cheetah, seat is from an EXT, I made the seat cover from salvage vinyl, the track was from a yamaha gpx. I now have a ’80 el tigre’ rubber track on it.  The drive clutch is a John Deere/Comet 102. Driven is from a cheetah. Skis are from Panther. Springs from a Jag. A friend gave me the motor. It was NOS.

What are you most proud of?

With all the odd parts I used it actually works pretty good.
That it was raced.

What do other people say about your sled?

I’ve had a few complements. I’m sure most are thinking it’s a pile of junk.
