1972 Skiroule RTX 440

What was your intended objective when you started the build?

to find Skiroule RTX that could be put back to as stock condition as I could find parts for.

What motivated you to start your project?

always wanted one in my younger days and just got the time to find one to complete.

What was the most unique and creative thing you did to the sled?

to find three sleds that where almost ready to be taken in for scrap, find what I could use out of the three, completely tear down to a naked tunnel, have it powder coated and then replace every bearing nut and bolt and take every component apart clean up and replace with the original that I could find. very few no the feeling and the work into seeing something that was ready for the scrap be reborn and out in the powder again.

What are you most proud of?

the completion of actually doing this project.

What do other people say about your snowmobile?

most after seeing the before and after pictures say its hard to believe if you just see the finished product it looks like a great original, that was my goal.

Even though my dad was a SnoJet and John Deere dealer when I was a kid, I loved the lines of this sled. You’ve done an awesome job!

The picture with the sled on top of the trailer is incorrect as it’s a front-engined 447 model. The one that was restored was a mid-engine model.

I could be wrong, but wasn’t the ’72 RTX 440 the only year that had the gauges mounted in the dash instead of on the handlebars? It could be he didn’t have a good enough ’72 dash to use.
    Still, a great job!

Think your right,I have a lot of Skroules 3 I believe of the ones your talking of they are447 RTXs all are twin piped, one is the early green all dash mounted gages 2 with head temp gage, also 2 RTXs with 340 Twin Sachs, dual carbs, stinger pipes! Also have few bubbles twins and singles and one beautiful cariol! 60 now and just getting back to them, dug out one of the Racers Monday and inti shop, getting some pallet racks up now so have better access to them and Polaris TXs,Herters,Chapparells.have also!

you are correct. I had a new 72 RTX 440, ran it for 6 yrs. Came with gauges in the console and twin tuned Donaldson mufflers. Put a 1″ spacer between the carb and intake, and a grose jet in the carb to fix vapor lock problem, also extended axial fan shroud to draw cooler air. The Sachs 437 liked cold air, and down around 0 degrees, this was the fastest sled around- but it did like to hole pistons.

Hi great job! i recently picked up a free 1972 skiroule 440 rtx and i need a little help with some parts. I understand these had electric start, it has the key and three locations, off run and i cant tell what the last spot is because the label is gone, mine runs but i need to change the fuel, in addition there are some wires that have been cut, the cutoff switch brown wire at teh handle bar and down by the fuse box was cut, and the connection block for the ignition switch was unplugged leaving me to suspect they couldn’t shut it off so they cut the wires. Also it doesnt have an air cleaner on it and the carb is a mikuni but it also has a john deere 440 fc sticker on the bottom of the float bowl so not sure if this was original, it also seems to have an aftermarket or replaced fuel block or pump that now resides on the glove box area below the carb. I also have the pull behind trailer but its missing the windshield. both units are in great shape and i can’t wait to clean them up and get it running better. just need some advice and maybe pics of yours as far as the wiring and maybe key switch and carb.
