solid mount engines BEWARE, everyone else BUY BUY
My email to National Cycle concerning the windshield lowers
------------------------------
I've had this mounting kit for my Windshield Lowers for only a couple months. Here's my Dennis Kirk receipt to show my purchase. Brackets torqued as spec'd, but the bolt holding one of the Lowers in place broke during a ride. Can you please send me a new inner bracket (broken one in the picture) and I also need a new mounting lug for the lower half of the bracket. Pictures shown.

I think perhaps when engineering this product, solid mount engines were overlooked. During acceleration to 4k rpms when appropriate to shift, the Windshield Lowers on my 2000 XL1200S vibrate violently back and forth from the engine feedback. They move back and forth as much as a quarter inch extremely rapidly. It looks like there's actually two Lowers, one in front of the other. An easy fix for this is to just reinforce the bracket with pipe clamps.

From an engineering standpoint, the inner bracket needs to have a thicker bolts and the Lower itself needs more reinforcement along the edge where the bracket plate is welded to the Lower. Just and inch more metal to isolate the vibrations would make a big difference in how much force absorption is asked of the two bolts holding the whole thing together. To take it to the next level, I would add a third bracket just below the lower triple tree. Front suspension bottoms out well before the lower triple tree so this would be a safe and extremely beneficial addition to the Windshield Lowers. I love these things, but as they are, they are too susceptible to vibrations from the road and engine, causing the mounting bracket to break easily under normal riding. This is twice the trouble if the mounting bracket has to hold both the Lowers and a regular windshield, then you've got a multiplied amount of force being absorbed by the mounting bracket bolts.
---------------------
This product will be fine with rubber mounted engines. Protects your shins from rocks and keeps you much warmer during colder riding seasons. MUCH warmer. Besides my problems with the weak structural engineering, these windshield lowers are an absolute must have for those inclined to ride over long distances in inclement weather. Your crotch will thank you, and by that I mean you'll still feel your junk at the end of the ride.

Work great.
I have the chopped switchblade windshield which I love, because it doesn't look big, but takes the wind off my torso. The wind coming from underneath the shield and over the tank was annoying. Putting on the lowers was pretty easy, I marked the bottom of the windshield brackets with painters tape so I would have the exact height when I put on the chime lowers. The wind now is significantly reduced. My only complaint is I wish they also came in gloss black to better match my blackline.
