I bought this in order to protect my rims while I am changing the tire on my Cruiser, they work really well, but I couldn't figure out what the rope was for so I just removed it. After that, I have had no problems using them and I have had them for about a year.
A must if you change your own tires, without them you'll chip the chrome. The strings help for when you drop one inside a tire. Keep in mind bearing surface when using spoons (tire irons) make sure the wide part of the spoon is on the rim protector or you could cut through.
I recently repalced the rear tire on my 2000 Fatboy. These small pieces of plastic were beyond belief. They fit snuggly on the rim and stay in place until you move them. Without these little gems there is no doubt that i would have nicked up the rim with the tire irons. These are a real rim saver. They are well worth the money.
Thicker than the slightly less expensive off brand rim protectors I have used. Probably a bit harder to pull the tire up over the extra thick protectors but more than compensated for by the fact they DO NOT bend. I have had the cheap rim prtctrs almost bend right off under a tire iron. the cheapies are good for sh!t after you use them one time. These guys wont stretch much and you will be able to reuse them at least a few times. Yes they do loosen up a bit after a couple uses but not nearly as much as the cheapies. Come with strong cord attached.
The product did a great job on doing what it was supposed to do. I got through four tires and did not receive one scratch on the powdercoating finish. The only downfall to this product is it only lasted through those four tires and became too tore up coming into the next tire change.
They do the job and protect your rims. They're soft enough to protect the rims but to much and you can push through the material. The rope attached will pull through the loop if you try to just pull them out.
Rim protectors are of good quality and the idea itself is a very good idea. I was unable to give it higher stars due to the issue that my rims were very fat at the lip and I had issues getting them on. I wish they were slightly wider opening. Other than that we used them on a buddies bike and they worked well so I will continue to keep them in my tool box.
I am not sure that I will end up using these much. Good idea, but in real life they don't really work that well. They deform easily and are bulky and actually get in the way of levering the tire off the rim. They won't work well on smaller rims. I think they will end up taking space up in my tool box.
