This tool is perfect for the job. Its o-ring design prevents marring the chromed surfaces and the relieved interior corners of the tool eliminates distorting the corners of the cap. And I especially appreciate the quality of the black oxide finish which will prevent rust. This tool is a keeper.
This socket worked like a champ when I replaced my worn sloppy stock springs on my Sporty. As quite a few people have said when reinstalling the caps go back till you hear and or feel the click of the threads seating, then go forward. The O ring on the top of the socket saves the wear and tear on your chrome, which is worth the price of the socket alone!
if you plan on working on fork internals buy one of these tools won't scratch or mark the fork caps. sometimes these caps are on tight and these are a lot cheaper then new caps and you can't have to many tools...
Rather than trying to order a socket from a tool source, I found this one. Good slim fit for getting under low risers. Decent tool hardend grade. The best thisng is that I got it cheaper and faster than other tool sources. It is an exact fit.
It works great for reaching the cap bolts on my FLHTC. It looks a bit different than the picture, (its actually black oxide coated), and does contain an o-ring inside to protect cap bolt from scratches. Also, the top of this socket is a 1" hex, so a 1" open/box wrench will also work this tool. This socket is well worth it's price for making easy removal/replacement of the top fork cap bolt. I'd also add that the overall height of this socket is 15/16".
My order of this fork cap socket was on-line and I received it in just 5 days, the service is excellent! The socket looks well made and is as decribed. I like the fact it's not very high and can slip under the handle bars. I reason I bought it, was the rubber o-ring inside to protect my chrome fork caps and it's made for chrome fork caps. The price was the best I found! Should last me many years as I change fork oil very 10,000 miles. Thanks Dennis Kirk, Graybeard
I ordered this for cap socket because I knew I didn't have anything in the toolbox that was the right size and wouldn't scratch up the chrome. It was one of those purchases where the price was right, and I thought hey, why not, right? Little did I know that this little gem was about to make my life so much easier. Use it just like a regular socket, pull that cap off, do your work, put it back on and be done with it. Very well worth the money in my honest opinion.
Getting the fork cap off is never easy but having the right socket helps. The nut socket seems to be of sturdy construction and a good fit on my 2008 XL1200N fork caps. It also helped getting the caps back on, which is never easy.
Definitely not a must have to get the job done but a very useful tool that can speed up the job. The only bad thing is, how often do you need to take the fork caps off?
