I consider myself to be pretty skilled with tools, but these seals made me feel like an idiot. These leaked on both sides and failed state inspection immediately. The inspecting mechanic recognized the problem--Leak Proof Seals--and suggested that I use factory seals. I replaced the so-called Leak Proofs with genuine Honda seals that same day, and have had no problems in the year+ since.
Put these on my old 1984 Honda Sabre with only 15000 miles on the odometer. Installed them. They were fine initially. But they started leaking after they were used alot. Once i saw they were leaking. I pushed down on my forks repeatedly with a fair amount of pressure and i could see it ooze out. About 1/2 teaspoon a cycle.
My forks aren't worn down. And no grooves in them. Smooth. So not sure why these would leak other than cheap seals.
Removing old fork seals is a fairly involved job, not one you want to repeat right away. The new seals installed easily enough, but developed slow leaks on both forks right away. Not just shiny tubes, but small puddles accumulating on the wipers. And no, I didn't damage the seals during installation. After 20 years as a seal designer, I understand how important it is to assemble them correctly. Now I either have to live with leaky forks or buy new seals and do the job a second time. After this experience, I can't recommend the Pro Moly fork seals.
I bought new bushings and seals for my 86 1100 shadow last year from the dealer...waste of $100....they leaked worse than the old seals...bought a set of leakproof seals and no more leakage...the wife's Virago needs the fork seals replaced...I'm going with LeakProof again!
I bought and installed the Pro Moly fork seal and dust wiper kit on my Honda Magna 750. Install was easy enough (as fork seal jobs go). Followed instructions to a T. One fork seal blew with less than 3000 miles of use on them. Cleaned and resealed the seal and it lasted the rest of the year. After being parked over the winter for about two months, both forks are leaking again! I haven't even moved the bike. The dust wipers won't even stay in place anymore.
These are junk. I would never order them again and I won't be recommending them to anyone.
Yes, the factory seals are pricier, but there is a reason. These seals are not built with nearly the same quality as my original Honda seals were. From day one, the dust seals would not stay in place - they kept rising up the fork legs and I had to keep pushing them back down. Then, they began leaking within a year. And the fork tubes are fine - the seal that started to leak was the opposite leg as the ones I took out. Going back to OEM for this particular part.
I installed new OEM fork seals on my GS750 and had one start leaking within 1,500mi. The inner tubes had no flaws I could see or feel but they still leaked. I installed these seals and haven't had a problem so far and its been around 5,000mi since then. The installation is easy, easier than OEM and the directions are clear.
Great fork seals. Easy to install didnt take much effort to seat in in comparison to OEM seals. Did have a small issue with the wipers coming out and sticking to the fork tubes fixed that with a bit of Teflon tape to add some diameter to them. 3,000 miles on them already and not a single drop of fork oil. I would surely buy them again if they were not leak proof
I bought this seal kit ahead of time while planning the overhaul of my forks. After removing the original seals and comparing them to the new Leak Proof parts, I returned the seal kit and ordered OEM seals. The OEM oil seal had metal springs in the seal and it looked like a more robust part than the oil seals included in this kit.
Is the Leak Proof design a better designed seal that offers "reduced stiction"? Maybe, but I place more trust in Yamaha to provide a quality part...and the price was about the same.
I got these assuming that they would be cheaper than the OEM seals, and they worked for about 2 months, but began to leak. I installed them correctly, but they didn't stay in place as well as the OEM's did. I ended up getting OEM seals for my CX500 from a local shop for cheaper, and they have held up much better!
The quality of these seals right out of the package was not confidence inspiring. They seem very cheaply made and I actually needed to reuse one of my O.E. dust wipers because the one in the kit was cracked. I had extra fork oil on hand so i decided to try them anyway. Only have about 200 miles on them so far, but, so far so good. No leaks of any sort yet. So I guess only time will tell.
Blown two sets of these in two years on my 600rr. I am an aggressive rider but this is rediculas. Fork fluid just pours out onto my fender and break clipper/pad. Not exactly what I call safe. OEM or nothing I guess.
