I have a Polaris Trail Boss 325. I have heard a light clunking noise that goes up and down with speed. I pulled the chain off, thinking that the chain may have a sticky link, or something of that nature, but it looks good. I did, however nodice that the drive sprocket, on the transmission, has some play in it. Is this normal?

BEST ANSWER: It isn't uncommon to have some freeplay on the drive sprocket. However, it is important to compare the splines on both the sprocket and shaft for visible signs of wear. As for the clunking, I would start with making sure the chain isn't worn and the it is aligned and adjusted properly. Then I would look to the brakes both front and rear to make sure the rotors are clean and straight and there isn't anything contacting the calipers or rims. Many polaris ATV's have a small brake disc on the transmission that is very common to rust and dirt issues. If there is any vibration or "hopping" I would look at the tires and axles to make sure they are straight. If this is a 4 wheel drive or independant suspension machine I would also look at the CV or axle shaft joints just to rule them out as well. It may be necessary to put the machine on jack stands and rotate the wheels while looking and listening for anything that seems out of place. I hope this helps and good luck.
