Needed some rewiring
Installed it on an 1985 XT600. My taillight didn't work in the ON position. Traced it back to the blue wire not having power coming out of the switch in the ON position, only had power in the PARK position. I just cut the blue wire and spliced it to the brown wire that is hot in the ON position and the taillight works perfect now. Just don't splice the cut half of the blue wire that leads to the switch, or you'll just be sending power back to the switch. Splice the cut half of the blue wire the leads to the connector, sending power to the taillight.

Will this fit a 1989 Yamaha xt550?
A shopper on Oct 3, 2016
BEST ANSWER: XT550's were only produced 1982-1983 here in the states. 1984 was the first year for the XT600 which used the same engine with larger bore, but a different frame setup. 1989 was the last year for that style of XT600, 1990 yielded a milder redesign of the XT600 which was less of a serious enduring machine and more street suited. The switch you are asking about should fit a 1989 XT600, and likely all 1984-1989 XT600's. The switch is similar in looks and functionality to the earlier XT550's, but I can't confirm that it would be an exact replacement. Hope that helps.
