Amid the snowmobile boom era of the early 70’s, both small and large manufacturers were throwing their hats in the ring with their own snowmobiles. MTD was one of the larger companies to do so with their Columbia snowmobiles. Columbia snowmobiles were introduced when the boom had already began. To set themselves apart from all of the other makes, Columbia snowmobiles were marketed as customizable snowmobiles. Owners had the ability to choose between three sizes of JLO engines, two different rear suspensions and two color options for hoods. Though this was a unique strategy, it didn’t catch on with enough riders for whatever reason. Today, there are still some devoted fans keeping their Columbia snowmobiles going and bringing them to their favorite vintage rides.
