I recently installed a set of cobra pipes on my bike, replacing drag pipes. I was experiencing a lot of backfire when down shifting or decelerating.
I was not sure what to expect from this unit. I had already made up my mind if I did not see noticeable improvement, I was going to return the unit immediately.
After installation, I fired my Road King up and headed for the interstate. As the add states, it virtually eliminated backfiring. I even notice an improvement in top in cruising. I'm glad I made the decision to try it out!
The key to installing this device is to have the necessary tools. I used two long handled slotted screwdrivers and a long needle nose pliers to remove and then reset the fuel injector electrodes. Loosening the fuel tank's three screws and removing them will help facilitate lifting the tank up two inches so that you can get at the injector electrodes it also helps if most of the gas is out of the tank making it lighter to lift up. You need to approach the injector connectors from the right side of the bike. It will be easier if you remove your breather cover and filter first. Removing the OEM connectors requires that you push in the wire bales at the top of the connector while pushing up on the connector to slide it off. The rear connector is not a problem, the front is more difficult since the bale is pointed at an angle away from you. I found that using a long blade screwdriver to push in on the bale helps out a lot. Using the other long blade screwdriver to push up on the connector at the same time helps great too.
Two things you need to keep in mind when assembling the wires and the device. Keep all the wires away from hot spots by using the supplied bands, especially at the cylinder heads and the rear exhaust manifold where the wires head under the seat for placement, and second, when you life up your tank you might pull your starter switch connector out of its place causing loss of electrical power. This will require you to remove your dashboard and check the connector to your start/off/light switch.
Once the Comet is connected and and you have set the three pots to the correct settings, you'll find your bike will run a lot smoother and you won't have any backfires when you power-down in gear. I haven't had it long enough to see any differences in fuel milage.
With the three pot setting screws instead of the automatic setting of the more expensive units, you are saving significant money. I personally think that using this Comet model is worth the savings.
The control unit is not water proof or even water resistant. I would be very careful using high pressure hoses to wash your chariot. Placing the device in a plastic bag may not be a bad idea. That is one reason why I gave it only 4 stars on fit and finish.
