Whether you bent a lever in a tip-over or you\u2019re installing an upgrade, the process only takes a few minutes and a couple of basic tools. On most bikes, the lever is held in place by a pivot bolt on the top and a nut underneath. Remove the nut first, then slide the pivot bolt out from the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before pulling the lever completely out, you need to disconnect the clutch cable. To do that, create slack in the cable using the barrel adjuster where the cable meets the lever perch. Turn the large dial on the adjuster all the way inward to give yourself the maximum amount of slack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With enough slack in the cable, pull the lever away from the perch and line up the slot in the adjuster so the cable can slip free. Once the cable end is detached, the lever will come right out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before installing the new lever, apply a small amount of grease to the pivot area and the cable end. This helps the lever move smoothly and reduces wear over time. Hook the cable end into the new lever, slide the lever back into the perch, and insert the pivot bolt from the top. Thread the nut back onto the bottom and tighten it securely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-clutch-adjustment\">Clutch Adjustment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the lever is installed, you\u2019ll need to reset the cable tension. Turn the barrel adjuster back outward until there is about 2 to 3 mm of free play at the lever before the clutch begins to engage. That small amount of slack is important for proper clutch operation and helps prevent premature clutch wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-brake-lever-replacement\">Brake Lever Replacement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Replacing the brake lever follows nearly the exact same process, but it\u2019s even simpler because there is no cable to disconnect. Remove the nut and pivot bolt, slide the old lever out, and install the new one in its place. A small dab of grease on the pivot bolt is a good idea here as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reinstall the pivot bolt, tighten the nut, and make sure the lever moves freely without binding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-final-safety-checks\">Final Safety Checks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before riding, take a moment to verify that everything is working correctly. Squeeze the front brake lever several times and confirm that the brake light activates as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then pull in the clutch and start the bike while it\u2019s in gear to make sure the safety switch is functioning properly. Shift through the gears and confirm that the clutch engages smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These quick checks only take a few seconds and ensure your controls are working exactly the way they should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Replacing your clutch and brake levers is one of the easiest maintenance jobs you can do on your motorcycle.
