In this guide, we\u2019ll walk you through installing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denniskirk.com\/custom-dynamics\/lighting-and-bulbs\">Custom Dynamics LED lighting<\/a> on a Sportster, a simple but impactful upgrade that enhances visibility while adding a modern touch. We chose Custom Dynamics, but the process will be the same for most other LED lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This lighting upgrade includes front running lights, rear running lights with turn and brake functions, and a Load Equalizer to ensure proper turn signal function. Because LEDs require much less draw, they can sometimes cause issues. These problems include &#8220;hyper flashing&#8221; or bulb-out warnings. The load equalizer simulates the electrical resistance of traditional lighting, which prevents these issues. The Sportster being upgraded here needed to have the load equalizer installed, but many new bikes with a Can-bus system are designed to work with LED lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by removing the seat. Locate and unscrew the Phillips-head screw at the back, then lift the seat off. Underneath, you\u2019ll find the factory wiring harness. The load equalizer has a small pigtail that connects to an input and output plug, which matches a similar-sized factory plug beneath the main wiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unplug the factory connector by pressing the release button and pulling the two halves apart. To protect against moisture, apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connectors before plugging in the Load Equalizer. Push the connectors together until they click into place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the Load Equalizer, you\u2019ll find a high\/low setting. If you\u2019re running full LED lighting, set it to &#8220;full LED.&#8221; If you&#8217;re unsure, refer to the Custom Dynamics instructions for guidance. Once installed, position the Load Equalizer in the open space beneath the seat, ensuring wires are not pinched when reinstalling the seat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-2-upgrade-the-rear-turn-signals-and-brake-lights\"><strong>Step 2: Upgrade the Rear Turn Signals and Brake Lights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To remove the taillight lens, locate the small notch on the edge and insert a flathead screwdriver to pop it off. Next, remove the bulb by pushing it in, twisting left, and pulling it out. Pay attention to the bulb\u2019s orientation\u2014on most Sportsters, the left pin is higher than the right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Custom Dynamics LED setup mirrors this configuration. Insert the new LED light, ensuring it aligns correctly. A small screwdriver slot on the back helps to lock it into place. Once secure, push the wires back inside and snap the lens cover back on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Test the lights by turning on the ignition. You should see a bright running light that intensifies when you apply the brake. The turn signals should also switch colors when activated, making them more noticeable to other drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-step-3-upgrade-the-front-running-lights\"><strong>Step 3: Upgrade the Front Running Lights<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Repeat the process for the front lights by removing the lens, swapping out the old bulbs, and inserting the new LEDs. Again, make sure the orientation matches, and apply a small amount of dielectric grease to protect the connectors from moisture. Once installed, test the lights to confirm they function correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-results-brighter-safer-and-cooler\"><strong>The Results: Brighter, Safer, and Cooler<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference in brightness is immediately noticeable.
