Everyone has a story about how they got bit by the bug and how they made motorcycles their life&#8217;s work. Nick Trask certainly is one of the more interesting and engaging guys that we&#8217;ve met. His work in building performance Harleys and Harley parts has landed him in the upper echelon of some of the most well respected builders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick visited the DK headquarters a little while ago and Chad got a chance to sit down and chat with him. They discuss how Nick got his start and how he ended up in Phoenix after he left his homeland of New Zealand. They also touch on what Trask Performance does and who their parts are for. We&#8217;re here with the guys from Dennis Kirk. They invited us out here to check out their facility and it&#8217;s amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Okay, Trask Performance. It&#8217;s not just my last name, it&#8217;s a I developed the company, we started the company 23 years ago and we&#8217;re performance-based company. We&#8217;re all passionate about performance-based Harleys and building power and developing performance products. When I came to this country, I didn&#8217;t know anybody. Didn&#8217;t have a pot to piss in, didn\u2019t have a window to throw it out of. And I came here and I saw opportunity. I can actually do something I really enjoy in this country. So, I sold everything I had in New Zealand, came over here and started a little performance shop in Phoenix. Actually, I started off with just a little dynamometer. Gad a little dyno, created a team of guys that that are passionate and we love building motorcycle performance parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And we just started, right started with the V-Rod and we did that for a bunch of years and then the Twin Cam. We started with the Twin Cam and \u201807. \u201806 it was a rear mounted kit and then we moved it up to the front and we went through a whole bunch of problems. Whole bunch of problems and then Thundermax came out. We worked back and forth with Thundermax to develop the system so we could get the boosted portion and uh, actually the last 10 years it&#8217;s been perfect. It&#8217;s been working great and we installed turbochargers all around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Man, I don&#8217;t feel like I work a day in my life. Right? I come to work and I just dream up stuff and me and my team, we put it together. We develop it. I just got a lot of passion. There\u2019s not nothing better than building something that just sounds badass, it&#8217;s got tons of power and it pulls and straightens your arms. Right? There&#8217;s nothing better than that. And then when you see a customer jump on his bike and he rides and he comes back, he&#8217;s a big, big grin on his face. Right, you can&#8217;t, it&#8217;s, it&#8217;s just so much fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad DK: Why Harleys specifically?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick, Why Harleys? Because they need all the work they can get. They need all the help they can get, right? They don&#8217;t stop. They don&#8217;t corner, they don&#8217;t, they don&#8217;t make much power. That&#8217;s our job right. We can make them unique or at least give them something that he can be proud of to make it his own. But with me it&#8217;s not about money, it&#8217;s not about anything. It&#8217;s about creating something to look forward to and that&#8217;s, that&#8217;s what keeps me going and sort of drives me is, is having something cool to look forward to right. Whatever it is. It&#8217;s coming up with a part, that pipe there that&#8217;s sitting right there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That Big Sexy pipe, I named that pipe because I come back, we built, we built this pipe on this customer&#8217;s bike. I came back, \u201cman that&#8217;s Big Sexy right there.\u201d And that&#8217;s how the name came about. So it&#8217;s like, because it was just, it was just came out right and it was just I liked it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad DK: Being from New Zealand, a young adult, young kid adult, what, like, you just make this jump but\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick: Well, I went to motorcycle school man. I was, I did my apprenticeship in New Zealand as an automotive engineer by trade right. So I went to the engineering school in New Zealand and basically an automotive mechanic by trade. I did my 8,000 hours. My five years as a mechanic and I was like man, I&#8217;m, my passion is motorcycles. I was working on Harleys in my backyard and doing them on the weekends and after work and I was like, you know what, I saw an ad in Easy Riders magazine. And I was like, wow man, I want to go to motorcycle school. This is cool. Look at this motorcycle School in Phoenix, Arizona or Orlando, Florida. So um, and, but then and the thing, we had internet back then. It was \u201996, right. So, I sent, I put an envelope, sent it off to the school and then this guy calls me. Calls me a few months later. I wake me up at four o&#8217;clock in the morning. I get on the phone I hear this weird accent. It&#8217;s like some dude on the phone asking Little Nick if he wants to come to the motorcycle school. I&#8217;m like yeah man, I&#8217;m in. Yeah I feel like I won the lottery right. I&#8217;m just some little Kiwi kid in New Zealand. Didn&#8217;t know nothing. I&#8217;m green, as green as they come and they brought me this, they, this guy named John on the phone says, \u201cNick you want to come to school?\u201d Well there&#8217;s an American accent. I\u2019m like shit yeah. Yeah man, I&#8217;m coming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t know how I was going to get there yet or if I could afford it or whatever. But I got off the phone and I just made the decision right then. I&#8217;m going over to America. I&#8217;m going to America. And I sold whatever little I had, came here and I didn&#8217;t know, I didn&#8217;t know a soul. Actually the John I went to motorcycle school and John wasn&#8217;t there that day. So, I was like man where do I stay when, we&#8217;re going to stay but I&#8217;ve been over here for traveling for a couple days, three days. Got my little Forrest Gump suitcase right. No wheels on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yeah, it&#8217;s a Sheila up front in the, in the, in the little reception area. Where am I gonna stay. Kind of, anywhere I can stay? And she says there\u2019s these little Crossroads Apartmens down the street. So she called me a cab and picked me up and took me under this little Crossroads Apartments and I was like man, I had my little travelers checkbooks because you couldn&#8217;t right, we didn\u2019t have cell phones and all that shit then. Right, I just had my little travelers checks. SO I wrote travelers check for three months rent and I went to studio apartment. Went in this little studio apartment, opened the door up and there&#8217;s nothing in it. I&#8217;m like dude, you cheap buggers. You can&#8217;t even put any furniture in this place. Yeah, I&#8217;ve got a box to sleep in, but I got no food. I got no nothing. Yeah those are good old days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad DK: it&#8217;s amazing how, like especially the more where we do these interviews, guys like you, you know that&#8217;s, that&#8217;s usually the comment in the good old days. It&#8217;s the days of the struggle. The self-discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It builds who you are. It builds who you are and when you go through problems, you know, you look at a problem as being something that&#8217;s bad. You look at it as being a learning curve. Like my building burned to the ground. Neighbor\u2019s burned it down right. And almost put me out of business. And I look back at a lot of things now. My old partner died. A guy spun him out and hit the curb and got flipped out of the car. So I&#8217;ve been through a lot of, a lot of catastrophe. Things throughout my business career and, you know, I would change the fact that Mike, Mike died. But everything else, I wouldn&#8217;t change anything because, you know, I built, built me, built, made my character and built me who I am and it tells me that I wasn&#8217;t ready to be successful back then anyway. So you know what, now it&#8217;s giving me a big shit sandwich and now I&#8217;m good as gold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad DK: So when you&#8217;re looking at the future of, future of the industry from a personal perspective, what do you see?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick: What I see man is, uh, what I&#8217;d like to see is, I&#8217;d like to see everybody that has a company, as a reputable brand, get together and support, the support all the events, right. Because we don&#8217;t create excitement for our customer, for our, for our, for the guy that drinks our Kool-Aid. If we can&#8217;t keep the excitement going, he&#8217;s going to go by jet skis right or even ride the skateboards or something right. So we&#8217;ve got to keep them on motorcycles. We&#8217;ll keep them excited, we can keep him feeling cool, feeling badass. We&#8217;re gonna, we&#8217;re gonna keep that up and we can&#8217;t do it with just me and one other guy over here and another guy over here. We need, the whole industry needs to not look at themselves, look at his overall group and we all jump in and we all do it right, we all, we all be positive there&#8217;s enough business for everybody and we&#8217;ll help each other out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad DK: This is your first time visiting Dennis Kirk, right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick: It&#8217;s the first time visiting this place and I&#8217;m very impressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chad: What has been some of your, uh like what has been some things, the what stood out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nick: What stood out to me is, is how much you guys are putting into growing it and how much effort and how much you&#8217;re changing the whole brand image. And you&#8217;re not just a mail order company right. You&#8217;re keeping me making it, create an excitement for the for the brand and that, that just that leads to the customer right. The customer wants exciting. Exciting place to go get their stuff. They don&#8217;t, they don\u2019t want some boring catalog on the desk right. They want something that&#8217;s exciting. They want, if they want to feel like they&#8217;re part of something and I think you guys are doing a great job.
