AMA Urges You to Tell EPA Your Thoughts on E15 Gasoline

In a previous post, we discussed how ethanol in gasoline can be harmful to the engines of powersports machines.  Many of us fear that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will eventually make it so that all gasoline will required to be an E15 blend, which would be detrimental to a vast majority of the powersports engines, new and old. Fortunately, the EPA has recently issued a rule proposal to reduce the total amount of ethanol required in transportation fuel nationwide in 2014.  This rule proposal would slow the introduction of E15 gasoline.  The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) just issued a press release calling for all motorcyclists to support this rule proposal. We have all heard the horror stories about ethanol in gasoline destroying small engines and powersports engines, including snowmobiles.  Most of these stories are true and ethanol really can be harmful, but with the right knowledge and prevention, we can continue to enjoy the sport we love without worrying about costly damages to our machines.  In this post, we’ll try to understand ethanol a little better and how that knowledge can help us run our engines more safely.
