Overview of Avon AV84 & AV85 TrekRider Tire

Avon Tires has launched its new TrekRider motorcycle Tire. The TrekRider is Avon's first "adventure tire", and offers a 50:50 split of on-road versus off-road performance. Designed for light to medium trails, the tire is designed to work as well in mud and gravel as it does on asphalt.

Avon says the new tire makes choosing tires for an adventure bike much simpler. Often when selecting the best road bike tire, performance can be limited when riding on mud, but with a full-on dirt tire, a bikes road holding can be affected. Avon's new TrekRider has been designed to cut out any of this compromise.

To achieve this the TrekRiders pattern has tread blocks and channels designed to cut through mud, yet also stay stable on tarmac and concrete. An enhanced construction on the cross-ply and radial carcasses gives better high-speed stability for motorway work, yet retains the compliance found on the dedicated dirt bike tire. Finally, a specially-chosen compound mix optimises grip on both wet and dry roads, while boosting traction in the dirt.

NOTE:

Dennis Kirk recommends a new tube and rim strip when replacing a tube-type tire

Safety Warning:

Please consult tire manufacturers publication(s) and/or website(s) for information on tire care, safety, installation, maintenance, manufacturer’s warranty and other information. The tires used for your application must have a load index and speed rating equal to or greater than the tires fitted as original equipment.

Antithesis to the K60 Scout
I ran the K60 a few months back, these tires perform equally in the dirt and gravel but have the best road manners of any tire I've every ran. Combined with speed and handling on the street, this is also the best rain tire I've ridden, on par with the Anakee 3 I ran last year. I beat on it pretty good on my morning commute and still couldn't break it loose.

On the dirt and gravel, this tire grips well and is very predictable. You can air down a bit and get even better grip for when the trail gets wet and snotty. Watch out in mud, if you don't keep you speed up the front tire will load up pretty bad, but that's common in 50/50 tires IMHO, you need full knobs if you want to play in mud for long periods of time.

This tire probably won't see the mileage that the K60 can get, but it also doesn't square off like a car tire the way the Scout does. The Trekrider stays round and continues to delivery in crappy weather until the tread is gone. An excellent choice for riders that want better road performance between trails and still want to keep equal off-road prowess among 50/50 tires.
