ATV Ignition System Parts

The primary purpose of your ATV ignition system is to create spark. Without spark, your engine will not run. A failure in the ignition system can be one of the most frustrating problems to diagnose. The failure is often not visual and must be tested with a manual and a multimeter. This can be intimidating for inexperienced mechanics, but it can be done when you follow the proper steps. When you do find the problem, you want to be sure you replace the faulty part with one you can trust will work. At Dennis Kirk, we carry the best ATV ignition system parts from top brands like Ricks Motorsports Electrics, Moose, and Kimpex.

ATV CDI boxes don’t commonly fail. When they do fail, though, they can bring the show to a halt. The symptoms of a failed or failing CDI is no spark, hard starting, rough idle, misfires and stalling. Troubleshooting a CDI is a difficult task for a novice, but it can be done. There are five circuits to test on a CDI: power in, ground, trigger, kill, and power out.

A more common failure is the ignition coil. Again, you can test these yourself with a multimeter tool and a manual for specs. ATV ignition coils are much easier to test than a CDI. Follow your manuals steps for testing and you will quickly know if it is the cause of failure. The most common culprit for ignition troubles is the spark plug caps and the spark plugs themselves. These are a great place to start your troubleshooting.
