With all of the legend and lore surrounding Harley-Davidson, the Harley FXR might be the most legendary of all of their motorcycles. The FXR was born during the rebirth of the MOCO after the buyout from AMF and was used to push the company past their failures. But it wasn’t immediately seen as a total success. Many loyal HD riders felt the FXR was too advanced and akin to the imported Japanese bikes. As more people began riding the bikes, though, the FXR bikes became the epitome of design and performance.

The FXR was known as an “engineer’s bike” when it came around. And at the time, it was the most technologically advanced bike they had ever produced. The engineering team focused less on the company’s heritage and more on creating the best motorcycle they could. The frame is what set it apart. It was painstakingly created with hand welded stamped steel parts into a triangular shape. The Shovelhead and five-speed transmission was rubber mounted. This combined with the stiff frame provided a smooth and consistent ride. The rear shocks were placed further back for balance.

The FXR was meant to ride fast and sporty. The bikes have a high ground clearance, high seat and high pegs, which allow it to have deep lean angles. Riders can thank the design team for the sporty ergonomics. And the design team just so happened to include former racer Eric Buell. Today, the FXR is still lauded for its performance capabilities. In recent years, the demand for the FXR frame has become immensely. Custom builds using the FXR frame have become so popular that finding one is incredibly rare.
